After a series of leaks, teaser and spy photography the MINI officially reveals the new Cooper which has grown in length by 98 mm, a width of 44 mm and a height of 7 mm of over the model it replaces. The wheelbase reaches 2495 mm (+42 mm) with the tracks have grown by 42 mm front and 34 mm rear. So the new MINI measuring 3.821 mm long, 1.727 mm wide, 1.414 mm in height, offering 211 liters of luggage space (30%).
It is built on the UKL platform and borrows some design elements from the Rocketman Concept . Will initially be available with three turbo Euro 6 engines (TwinPower rather than twin-turbo) which all come with a Start / Stop. The petrol engines are equipped with a direct fuel injection and double VANOS. Note also that these are the first engine fitted to Mini coming from parent BMW.
Entry-level engine is a three cylinder petrol 1.500aris performance 134 hp and 220Nm of torque at 1,250 rpm. There overboost function that increases for a few seconds torque to 230Nm. With this engine, the MINI has an average consumption of 4.4 l/100 km and 105 g/km emission of CO2.
Here’s 1.5-liters performance three-cylinder turbodiesel 114 hp and 269 Nm torque at issue Cooper D. Has an average consumption of 3.5 l/100 km and 92 g/km emission of CO2.
Finally initially be available is a four-cylinder, two-liter engine in the Cooper S version with a yield of 189 horses and 280Nm-300Nm with overboost-, which consumes 5.6 l/100 km and emits 133 g/km CO2.
The above engines come with boxes manual and automatic six-speed ignoring the trend of growing relationships for the sake of efficiency. The Mini Cooper, which will have automatic transmission and navigator will have a new technology from BMW that can “expect” and “anticipate” downshifts, as for example when approaching the vehicle crossing or sharp turn. Besides, manual gearboxes for will have a system that will match the speed of the engine speed changes.
Later will be added to the range and versions One, One D, Cooper SD and naturally fast JCW.
Leaving powertrain aside, the new Mini Cooper has a completely modern chassis. The UKL1 platform benefits from technologies shared with the BMW i series and side mounts, ahead lies the proven single-link spring strut axle and behind the advanced version of the multi-link arrangement. Interest is the fact that for the first time in the history of Mini offered electronically adjustable suspension with Variable Damper Control switch inside for selecting one of the two operation mode (Comfort and Sport). The steering will not be another of the next generation of EPS (Electronic Power Steering).
Standard equipment there and active bonnet that protects pedestrians involved in accidents, 15-inch wheels (16-inch in Cooper S), while the additional equipment we meet rims up to 18-inch.
Worth mentioning is the fact that MINI is often referred to weight / reduce weight / lightweight materials etc and in sport handling without sacrificing comfort. The wheel, the brakes, the suspension and engine response, all have to do with the feeling that gives the Mini Cooper on the road. Given the history of the model, we hope to not disappoint.
Features LED luminaires front-back and inside we find a new head-up display that shows information in a small retractable screen on the dashboard. May indicate the vehicle speed, navigation system information or entertainment and various alarms.
On the security front, there is a collision warning system and corresponding system for pedestrians and both have “city braking” function. If the system considers that a collision is imminent, warns the driver through both audible and visual stimuli. If the driver does not respond, the system then automatically brake the vehicle so as to avoid collision or at least reduce the speed with which the inevitable happens.
The car also offered with a system that activates and deactivates the high beam lights depending on traffic and general lighting. Other systems include an active cruise control that uses camera, rear camera and parking assist, system memorizes the marks on the road and shows information related to the speed limit and whether permitted or not overtaking.
The speedometer in the instrument panel has been removed, since there has been placed infotainment system, which features an illuminated frame, which flashes when the phone rings the driver. The main screen 8.8-inch is controlled via two switches similar in concept to the iDrive of BMW, with the rear seats folded down to proportion 60:40.
In England the MINI Cooper starts from £ 15.300 (€ 18.220), the Cooper D from £ 16.450 (€ 19.590) and Cooper S from £ 18.650 (€ 22.210). The hand over will start from next spring.
