Supercar rolls into production
• MEDIA INVITATION/PHOTOCALL, TUESDAY 17 DEC, 10AM: Mayor of Liverpool officially opens the brand new BAC facility, kick-starting production of the award-winning Mono in the city
A NEW era of automotive excellence is about to begin in Liverpool, as the stunning new headquarters of the city’s very own supercar opens its doors.
Mayor of Liverpool, Joe Anderson, officially opens the new Briggs Automotive Company (BAC)* manufacturing facility in South Liverpool on Tuesday 17 December - after supporting the relocation of the motoring pioneers to the city through his Mayoral Investment Fund.
It marks the start of the production, in Liverpool, of the ground breaking, BBC Top Gear Stig’s Car of the Year – BAC Mono - which is the world's first road-legal, single-seater production car.
The 11,000 sq ft facility in Speke Hall Industrial Estate, Speke, will be producing around 100 cars a year by 2015 and is set to create almost 60 local, high-end manufacturing jobs, including apprenticeships, as well as new regional supply chain opportunities.
BAC’s decision to make Liverpool the new home for production of their niche, high-performance supercar is a major coup for the city, and will further strengthen the City Region’s reputation in automotive production, following the success of Jaguar Land Rover’s Halewood plant.
Mayor of Liverpool, Joe Anderson, said: “We’ve worked hard for over a year, through my Mayoral Investment Fund, to bring BAC to Liverpool, and I’m absolutely delighted that it’s now all systems go for their first-class manufacturing facility. I can’t wait for production of the Mono to officially get underway.
“This deal will create new jobs, new apprenticeships and new supply chain opportunities. It’s great news for our city and is another example of how I am delivering on my Mayoral pledge to make Liverpool the preferred choice for investment and jobs.
“Liverpool already has a thriving motor industry, and this is taking us to another level. Being home to a supercar like this adds an extra dimension to our automotive offer and will bring a real boost to the sector.
“The Mono has gained – and continues to gain - a string of accolades and recognition wherever it goes, and it has motoring experts all over the world extremely excited. I’m proud that such a car will now be made in Liverpool, and I look forward to us forming a close relationship over many years.”
BAC Mono won the BBC TopGear ‘Stig’s Car of the Year' award in 2011, and created a major buzz nationally in the summer, when it set the 2nd fastest TopGear lap time in the show’s history (series 20, episode 2).
Neill Briggs, Co-Founder and Technical Director of BAC Ltd, said: “Everyone at BAC is thrilled and full of pride about our move to Liverpool – the new home of the Mono supercar. This fantastic facility - allied with the recruitment of highly skilled individuals - will allow us to meet sales demand from across the globe.
“We would like to thank Mayor Anderson and his team for all their support in facilitating this move, which would otherwise not have been possible, and look forward to building on this region’s reputation as an area of automotive excellence.”
The company is looking to recruit to its team, with a mixture of jobs on offer for local people. There are employment opportunities for people with experience of working on high-performance and new model launch cars, as well as apprenticeship opportunities. BAC is also looking to source components locally and is in talks with a number of suppliers from the region over potential opportunities.
