General Motors introduced the new Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra in Detroit last with the main feature being the new engines with cylinder deactivation technology. Engineering may be robust but at disadvantaged weight issue and among other things, Ford has stated that the new generation of F-150 will be significantly lighter, about 340 pounds.
The representative of GM, Tom Wilkinson, said that they are designed to reduce weight but it will not happen earlier than 2019, which will be showcasing the new generation of the pickup. He stated:
We will consider all means we can, materials, aerodynamics, engine, so that we can continue to improve the efficiency of our vehicles, both on a temporary basis as we move toward the next generation of pickup.
Refused to give clearer details, but sources say that the company will present a Silverado with high strength aluminum, in 2014, which would weigh about 113 pounds less than the basic model, which will improve fuel economy by 20%.
While the chassis pickup does not seem to decline over the next 5-6 years, the American colossus seems to make any time updates. No nothing is official yet, Chevrolet is working closely with its suppliers to build lighter springs, axles and shafts.
