It is widely known that the engines of BMW are among the best of automakers, especially the series of diesel engines of the Bavarian company. However, the use of oil as fuel, can nowadays be quite ordinary and hold more than 58% of the European market in the early 80s, however, things were different, characterizing noisy and “dirty.”
The BMW tried to change that, partly because of the major problems was the oil crisis of the 1970s and the German company celebrates 30 years fitting diesel engines in models.
During the course of its first engine, BMW wanted to combine fuel economy and durability, without losing the high horsepower, direct response strength and optimum smoothness of use.
The result was a turbo 2.4-liter engine performance 115 horsepower and 210 Nm of torque, which was placed in 524 tD (E28), 1983. The car became the fastest diesel-powered vehicle in the world, as did the 0-100 km/h in 12.9 seconds while the top speed reached 180 km/h. The, no, average consumption was 7.1 litres/100 km
The rest is history, and today BMW offers the tri-turbo 6-cylinder 3.0-liter diesel engine fitted to cars M Performance, the M550d, X5 M50d and X6 M50d.
