There was a time when cars Le Mans used to run with bodies with exceptionally long rear overhang. The idea was to take advantage of a low-drag aerodynamic configuration to maximize speed. With the emergence of the chicanes on the straight of the circuit, the importance of having fewer Cx gave way to ask for a configuration with more grip, and its use was falling, although many teams prepared their machines especially for Le Mans.
Audi, this year, coming back down that road, and for Le Mans has prepared a special configuration of the Audi R18 e-tron with elongated rear and low downforce configuration. Really, the rear overhang length does not vary a whole, as it is limited to 750 mm by regulation, but shifts the focus to reach that length.
Audi has lengthened both rear flippers to dimensional limit, where before had the rear spoiler protruding from them. He has placed the wing in a lower position, which would act as a “second diffuser”, helping to accelerate the air extracted from underneath the car.
And the signing of the four rings victory hybrid wants to repeat this year. To see what Toyota invented to meet the challenge.
