The Mitsubishi announced that it has identified the problem showed the batteries of hybrid / electric cars, which led to discontinuation of Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV and I-MiEV. The problem was traced to a battery cell which is derived from the supplier of Mitsubishi. The problem occurred in a selection process that was added to the production line in December 2012.
It was found that during the sorting process, the shape of an inner portion of the battery cell was altered and some microscopic contaminants produced, which resulted in the battery is exposed to high forces. The Mitsubishi deleted this selection process and no longer restarts the production of hybrid / electric cars.
