General Motors is planning to enable its models like wi-fi points from 2014. By the middle of next year GM and the U.S. operator AT & T will unite to equip most models of the group in the U.S. and Canada with free broadband internet 4G LTE, the fastest currently available for mobile devices. A term, GM will offer the service globally.

Many current multimedia systems need to be linked to a smartphone to access online content such as traffic conditions, for example. The system will be accessible to external users, thus making the car a wi-fi hotspot. Not that GM wants to become operator of the Internet, but it’s an added advantage to the system. GM wants the 4G in your car so that the driver has a much faster access to information, with a dedicated system and not through your phone. Thus, also facilitate system upgrades as well as maps of the browser or new features.

Currently, only Mercedes-Benz and Chrysler proposed an integrated system similar in some of their models, but they do it with 3G technology.
